Abstract

Conrad Detrez (1937-1985), a Belgian naturalized Frenchman, played a significant role in Brazilian history and culture, despite being little known. He participated in the resistance against the dictatorship and, after being tortured and expelled from the country in 1967, took refuge in Paris, where he became a writer and translator of Brazilian works, such as those by Jorge Amado and Antonio Callado. This study aims to narrate his multifaceted and underrepresented biography, highlighting his importance to Brazilian history and culture. This research utilizes qualitative and micro-historical analysis of public and private sources about his life and work, including his literary production and intellectual activities. The aim is to highlight his legacy, emphasizing his importance to Western history and culture, particularly in the Brazilian context.
