This article aims to think about the figure of filmmaker Adélia Sampaio, currently considered the first black woman to direct a feature film in Brazil, within the Brazilian cinematographic field through her image in the media. The aim is to understand what dimension and importance the filmmaker had at the time of production of her films (from the late 1970s to the 1980s) and what dimension she acquired in the 2010s, when she was rescued by Edileuza Penha de Souza in her thesis (2013) as a pioneering black filmmaker in the country. The article hopes to position Adélia Sampaio in a definitive place in Brazilian cinema.
