Abstract

The present work focuses on the analysis of an episode that took place in Rio de Janeiro during the imperial period: a duel of honor between José Ferreira de Araújo and João José dos Reis Júnior in the year 1886, which was later dubbed by the local press as the Duel of Ilha d'Água. This event holds significant peculiarities for analysis, as it occurred within a very specific context of the local press and due to it. That being said, we address both the justifications that led to this confrontation and the event itself, taking into account the existing debate on duels as a means of restoring honor. To accomplish this, we draw on various newspapers from the period that cover this particular duel, paying attention to their statements and positions regarding the event.
