Abstract

The celebrated Scottish folk duo The Corries (1966-1990), consisting of Ronnie Browne and Roy Williamson, were born during an effervescent period for Scottish culture and nationalism. The folk revival seen in Scotland between the 1950s and 1960s revolutionized the way the Scottish public related to art and politics. We will analyze the uses of historical references, their possible purposes and meanings in two songs recorded by The Corries: the original Flower of Scotland and The Skye Boat Song, the latter a re-recording of a Scottish folk song.
