CITIZENSHIP, DEMOCRACY AND CIVIC FREEDOM:
THE IDEA OF PUBLIC PHILOSOPHY IN MICHAEL SANDEL
Keywords:
citizenship; communitarianism; democracy; civic freedom; republicanism.Abstract
This research addresses the relationship between Michael Sandel's theory and republicanism, as well as analyzing the new publication of the work The Discontent of Democracy. To achieve this objective, the text presents three sections, with the first section focusing on explaining the common relationship of communitarianism and republicanism with Aristotelian philosophy, while the second section works on democracy from the ideal of public philosophy of Michael Sandel, from a look at the new version of the aforementioned work and, finally, the third section reflects the viability of a civic republicanism, claimed in the work by Sandel. The conclusion points to the fact that the preparation of citizens for shared actions in the polis in favor of the common good requires moral education, so that civic awareness is possible, for which the role of formal education and also of instruction in the family nucleus is necessary. It also concludes that Sandel aligns himself with civic or Athenian republicanism, highlighting that in the recently republished work, Sandel makes numerous references to republicanism and, practically, does not refer to communitarianism.
